Caption

Arthrosis of the knee. Coloured X-ray of a side view of the knee of a patient with arthrosis. The joint is swollen and there are osteophytes, or abnormal bony growths (dark blue) on the bone. Arthrosis is a degenerative joint disease that damages cartilage and bone. As the cartilage is worn away, new bone grows as part of the repair process. This causes stiffness and deformity of the joint. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs and in severe cases surgery.
