Frozen shoulder. Coloured frontal X-ray of the shoulder joint of a patient with an inflammation of the shoulder joint known as a frozen shoulder. Also called scapulohumeral periarthritis, this condition has resulted in calcification of the rotator cuff, seen as the white area at upper left above the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). The rotator cuff is a set of shoulder muscles and tendons. The shaft of the humerus is at lower left. To the right of the head of the humerus is its socket in the scapula (shoulder blade). Across top is the collarbone (clavicle), ending above the calcified area of the rotator cuff. Periarthritis may develop from arthritis or after an injury. Treatment is with physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs.
