Caption

Arthritic hip. Coloured frontal X-ray of the hip of a patient with osteoarthritis. This is seen here as a narrowing of the space between the bones of the hip joint, showing where the cartilage has worn away, leading to inflammation of the joint (arthritis). The head of the femur (upper centre) is rubbing against the bone of its socket in the pelvis. This causes severe pain and is usually treated by replacing the hip joint with a prosthetic implant.
