Swollen ankle. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that results in the loss of cartilage in a joint. Cartilage cushions bone against wear and tear. The healing process leads to the growth of bone in the place of cartilage, causing pain, stiffness, loss of mobility and inflammation. Treatment is with anti- inflammatory drugs.
