Pneumocystis carinii cysts. Light micrograph of a lung sample from an AIDS patient showing cysts of Pneumocystis carinii. Pneumocystis carinii is a single-celled organism, believed to be a fungus. It causes pneumonia in immunosuppressed patients particularly those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Here, the thick- walled cyst phase (purple, rounded) of the organism can be seen. The cysts contain up to 8 daughter cells or sporozoites (not seen) which will be released as trophozoites. Phase contrast technique. Toluidine blue stained. Magnification: x500 at 35mm size.
