Inflamed bursa on the wrist of an elderly woman. A bursa is a fluid-filled sac present at points in the body where skin, muscles and tendons slide across bone. The bursa helps to maintain smooth movement between these structures. Repetitive movement or excessive pressure can lead to the bursa becoming inflamed or infected, a condition known as bursitis. This results in rough and painful movement, which causes the bursa to become more inflamed, exacerbating the condition. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication and cortisone injections.
