Black hairy tongue on a 2 year old boy. This condition occurs when the filiform papillae (thread-like projections) that cover the tongue become enlarged and overgrown with fungi. The cause is not known but it may be due to poor oral hygiene or the use of antibiotics, which remove bacteria from the mouth that were suppressing the growth of the fungi. Treatment is with thorough cleaning of the tongue and mouth and antifungal drugs.
