Bursitis of the ankle of a 28 year old woman. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, a fluid-filled sac that cushions and lubricates areas where tissues, such as muscles and tendons, move over bone. Bursitis is caused by repetitive movement, trauma or prolonged and excessive pressure on the bursa. Here, the bursitis occurred as the ankle joint rubbed against ill-fitting skiing boots. Inflammation makes normal movement painful. Treatment is with rest and anti-inflammatory drugs. In severe cases the bursa may need to be drained.
