Breast cancer. View of a large tumour in the arm- pit (axilla) of a woman. The arm is at right and the edge of the breast can be seen at left. This lump is a secondary carcinoma. In other words the cancer arose somewhere else in the body. A carci- noma is a malignant tumour arising from cells in the covering surface layer or lining tissue of a body organ. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the developed world. It is usually found on the upper, outer part of the breast. Treatment involves surgical removal of the tumour (lumpectomy), radiotherapy and/or antican- cer drugs (chemotherapy).
