Mastectomy scar. View of the chest of a 74-year- old woman showing the scarring resulting from mastectomy. Mastectomy is surgical removal of the breast, usually carried out because of cancer. The amount of breast removed depends on the size and location of the tumour. In this patient, who had recurrent breast cancer, a total mastectomy of the breast at left was carried out. Mastectomy is usually followed by a course of radiotherapy or anticancer drugs. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women.
