Breast cancer. Coloured mammogram of a breast showing a cancerous tumour. The tumour appears as the large pink area. The nipple is at lower centre. Mammography is a special X-ray technique that is used to visualize soft tissues of the breast as a means of screening women for breast cancer. The cancer is more easily treated if it is caught early. Tumours may show early evidence of invasive (malignant) behaviour, but may exist in a non-invasive form. Treatment may include anti- cancer drug therapy and radiotherapy. It may also involve removal of the tumour or the more radical removal of the whole breast (mastectomy).
