Breast cancer. Coloured gamma scan (scintigram) of a cancer (red, upper right) in a woman's breast, seen from the side. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer (malignant tumour) in women. Treatment involves surgical removal of the cancer, often combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The cancer was imaged using the radioactive tracer technetium-99m (Tc-99m). This was injected into the blood supply to the breast and preferentially taken up by the more active cancerous tissue. The tracer is detected by its emission of gamma rays.
