Breast abscess. Light micrograph of a section through an abscess (far right) of a female breast. An abscess is a localized collection of pus that is surrounded by damaged & inflamed tissue. It may develop during breast feeding due to bacterial infection, as a result of cracked nipples and areolae. An abscess is usually treated by eradicating the infection with antibiotic drugs, although the pus may also need to be drained.
