Breast X-ray. Coloured mammogram of a healthy breast. Dense orange areas are the fibrous tissue that makes up much of the breast's mass. The ribs (grey, left), blood vessels (red) and the nipple (lower right) are seen. A mammogram is taken to check for tumours that are too small to be found by physical examination alone. The successful treatment of breast cancers depends on early detection, when surgical removal is still viable.
