Breast lumpectomy scar. Close-up of the breast of a 72 year old woman after an operation to remove a malignant (cancerous) lump from her breast. During the procedure her lymph nodes were also checked to see if the cancer had spread. A blue vegetable dye is used to help identify the lymph nodes. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. The cancer can invade surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). Surgery is often combined with radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
