Breast cancer test after surgery. Blue dye injected into a 72-year-old woman's breast as part of sentinel node mapping following surgery for breast cancer. The operation was to remove a carcinoma, a cancer of the epithelial tissue in the breast. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. The cancer can invade surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). Treatment is with removal of the tumour only, where possible, or complete removal of the breast. This test is intended to see if the cancer has been successfully removed.
