Breast cancer surgery. Image 8 of 9. Cosmetic surgeon using a syringe filled with saline to expand an implant inside a woman's breast. In this operation, called a modified radical mastectomy, the entire breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes were removed in order to remove malignant (cancerous) tumours. The surgeon then began reconstructing the breast by moving part of the latissimus dorsi back muscle into the breast prior. The implantation is the final stage of the operation. For a series showing this procedure, see images M122/497 - M122/505.
