Light micrograph of a section of the ileum affected by cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis), a hereditary disease affecting exocrine glands (mucous secreting glands, sweat glands & others). The condition results in production of thick mucous, which obstructs intestinal glands (causing meconium ileus in newborn infants), pancreas, & bronchi; severe respiratory infections are a common complication. Diagnosis is aided by identifying the excessive amounts of sodium & choride ions in sweat. Treatment involves minimising effects of the disease by administering pancreatic enzymes, using bronchial physiotherapy, & by preventing & treating secondary infections.
