Caption

Sebaceous cyst. An infected sebaceous cyst on a man's jaw, just below the ear. Also called a steatoma (or "wen" if it occurs on the scalp), this is a cyst arising in one of the skin's oil- secreting glands. Such cysts may grow to a large size; their contents, a yellow, cheese-like sebum, may become infected by bacteria as here. They are usually treated by surgical removal under a local anaesthetic.
