Candidiasis. Close-up of the sole of a foot affected by candidiasis, an infection caused by the fungus candida albicans. The condition is also known as thrush or moniliasis. It affects areas of mucous membranes, most commonly the vagina, and moist skin. Candida albicans is normally present in the vagina or mouth and its growth is kept under control by bacteria found in these sites. If a course of antibiotics destroys too many bacteria or the body's resistance to infections is lowered the fungus may multiply excessively. Candidiasis that affects the skin folds causes an itchy red rash with flaky white patches. It is treated with antifungal drugs.
