Sneeze. A woman sneezes onto her hand. Sneezing is an involuntary compulsive expulsion of air through the nose and mouth as a result of irritation of the respiratory tract. The irritation may be caused by inflammation of the tract, which occurs in the common cold, influenza and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Irritation can also occur by the presence of mucus or by the inhalation of an irritating substance such as dust or pepper. The ejection of fluid helps to cleanse the respiratory tract of dust or mucus. Sneezing is exploited by the cold virus, which uses sneezing as a means of spreading between people.
