Thyroid cyst. View of a swelling on the throat of a 56 year old man caused by a benign thyroid cyst. A firm hard nodule is seen in the patient's neck. Although initially painless, symptoms may arise when the growth causes pressure on the voice box or difficulty in swallowing. This may be one of the early signs of thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer is also known as scirrhous (very hard) carcinoma of the thyroid gland and is associated with exposure to radiation. Surgical treatment and chemotherapy are usually very effective.
