Branchial cyst. Close-up of the swelling resulting from a branchial cyst in the neck of a 30-year-old woman. Branchial disorders result from abnormal development of the branchial arches (ridges of tissue in the throat) in the embryo. A branchial cyst is a soft swelling, about 2 to 5 cm across, that appears in early adult life. The swelling contains a pus-like fluid rich in cholesterol. Treatment is by surgical removal.
