Ulcerative colitis. Coloured barium X-ray of the colon (orange) of a patient suffering from ulcerative colitis. Its lining has become inflamed and ulcered, giving it a ragged appearance. Ulcerative colitis, which commonly also affects the rectum, causes abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Its cause is unknown. The symptoms vary in severity from month to month, relapses being treated with anti-inflammatory drugs. In severe cases a colectomy (removal of the colon) may be required. Part of the spine (top to lower centre) and the bones of the pelvis (lower frame) are also seen.
