Infection (cellulitis) on the big toe of a 46 year old woman with insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes mellitus. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the skin and its underlying tissues. The infected area becomes red, hot and tender. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs, which may be taken for up to two weeks. People with diabetes have a reduced ability to fight infections.
