Crohn's disease. Coloured barium X-ray of the colon (large intestine, red) of a patient in the early stages of Crohn's disease. Parts of the colon have become inflamed and ulcered, giving it a ragged appearance. Crohn's disease usually affects the end part of the alimentary canal, resulting in abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The cause is unknown. Treatment includes rest, changes to the diet and antibiotic and steroid drugs. In severe cases, the affected parts of the intestine may be surgically removed.
