Liver cirrhosis. Image 3 of 4. Artwork of stage three, septal stage, of the Child's classification system of liver cirrhosis. Cirrhosis replaces normal tissue with fibrous tissue, causing the loss of functional liver cells. It may result from alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis infection or nutritional deprivation. Damage at this stage includes active fibrous septae and protein leaks into the body cavity (green drops). Blood flow is further restricted (lower right) through the hepatic artery (red) and the portal vein (blue). For a sequence of the four stages see images M130/658 - 661.
