Liver cirrhosis. Image 4 of 4. Artwork of stage four, biliary stage, of the Child's classification system of liver cirrhosis. The stomach (pink) is also seen. Cirrhosis replaces normal tissue with fibrous tissue, causing the loss of functional liver cells. It may result from alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis infection or nutritional deprivation. Damage at this stage includes ruptured gastric varices (swollen vein, blue). Blood flow through the portal vein (blue, lower left), which carries venous blood from the intestines, is all but stopped. For a sequence of the four stages see images M130/658 - 661.
