Runny nose. Artwork of a section through the ear, nose and throat of a patient with excessive mucus production due to a cold or hay fever (allergic rhinitis). The mucus is produced by the mucous membrane (red) that lines the nasal cavity and the facial sinuses. Colds are caused by an infection with any of a wide variety of viruses. Alternatively, similar symptoms may be caused by the inhalation of allergens such as airborne pollen.
