Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast that causes disease in AIDS patients, seen here as round spheres in the lung. Cryptococcus neoformans is the only species of the 37 Cryptococcus species that is pathogenic. The yeast is a causative agent of cryptococcosis infection.
