Osteosarcoma: excised specimen of a femur (thigh bone) showing the cancerous growth around the knee. Osteosarcoma is the most common primary cancer of bone, usually occurring around the knee in children & young adults. The tumours are highly malignant, possessing a well-developed blood supply that facilitates early spread (metastasis) to the lungs. Treatment is by amputation supplemented by chemotherapy.
