Caption

Venus flytrap digestive glands. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of digestive glands from a Venus flytrap plant (Dionaea muscipula). Enzymes are secreted by these glands to digest the insects trapped by the leaf traps. The Venus flytrap plant is carnivorous, trapping insects in its hinged and two-lobed leaf traps. The digestion of insects provides the plant with vital nutrients not found in the swamps where it grows. Magnification: x340 when printed 10cm high.
