Colon cancer. Colonoscope (endoscope) view within the human colon showing malignant tumours. Normal tissue of the colon is seen as yellow circular ridges. Tumours appear pink. Symptoms of colon cancer are changed bowel movements (constipation or diarrhoea); blood in the faeces; and lower abdominal pain. Sometimes there are no symptoms until the tumour grows so big as to obstruct the intestine. Surgical removal (colectomy) is a usual treatment, with a good prognosis if the cancer is discovered early. Colon cancer is common in Western countries, suggesting that a high-fat low- fibre diet is one probable cause.
