Cancer of the lung. Sectioned lung affected by squamous cell carcinoma. Cancer of the lung is one of the most common forms of cancer and the use of tobacco is thought to be the main cause of its formation. The first symptom to appear is a cough which, in half of all the people with lung cancer, becomes chronic. Other symptoms include coughing up blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and wheezing. The cancer may spread locally or to other organs such as the liver, brain and bones. The removal of the affected lung, pneumonectomy, is performed if the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage. Anticancer drugs and radiotherapy are used to contain the spread of the tumour.
