Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. A 9-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) reads a book with her parents in hospital. She is undergoing a 2-year course of chemotherapy, and her hair has partly regrown after the first stage. Leukaemia is cancer of the blood, caused by abnormal white blood cells that divide uncontroll- ably in the bone marrow, preventing normal produc- tion of healthy blood cells. ALL is thought to be started by a mutation in a single white blood cell called a lymphoblast. Symptoms include anaemia, poor blood clotting & increased risk of infection. Treatment involves repeated courses of chemother- apy, blood transfusions & bone marrow transplants.
