Caption

Malignant melanoma. Coloured digitised light micrograph of a malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer. The melanoma is seen as the dark red/ orange area. Melanomas are cancerous tumours of melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin (the pigment that colours the skin, hair and eyes). They most commonly occur in the skin and usually contain melanin, which gives them a dark colour. Melanomas typically spread quickly to other parts of the body, which inevitably leads to death. If they are caught early, they may be removed surgically, although radiotherapy and anticancer drugs may also be necessary.
