Cancer chemotherapy patient. Female cancer chemotherapy patient talking to a nurse in a hospital ward. Cancers are caused by the unchecked growth of abnormal cells. She is being treated with cancer chemotherapy, a course of anticancer drugs used to kill these cells or stop them from multiplying. Unfortunately the drugs used in cancer chemotherapy act on all rapidly dividing cells, not just cancer cells. Thus the bone marrow, intestinal lining, hair follicles, ovaries and testes are all also affected, sometimes causing severe side-effects. The chemotherapy has led to this woman's hair falling out.
