Sound wave. Oscilloscope trace of a sound wave from a violin. A pure sound wave of a single pitch manifests itself as a sine wave of constant frequency. The jaggedness of this sound wave is indicative of the imperfect nature of the output of the violin, but equally it is these imperfections which give the instrument its distinctive sound and character.
