Skin cancer. Close-up of a basal cell carcinoma on the cheek of a 47-year-old man. Also known as a rodent ulcer, this is the most common form of skin cancer among fair-skinned people, mostly affecting the elderly. It usually appears on the face and is thought to be caused by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. It slowly destroys the surrounding tissues, but seldom spreads further. Treatments include surgery, cryosurgery and radiotherapy.
