Neck tumour. Large growth in an 82-year-old man's neck. This is a small cell carcinoma, where 'small cell' refers to the histological characteristics used to identify it. A carcinoma is a cancer that arises from epithelial tissue, which is the tissue that covers the internal and external surfaces of the body. It is an aggressive cancer that spreads rapidly to other parts of the body, often before diagnosis, and the prognosis is poor. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are used to treat patients, as surgery is of little help. The patient also has bruising to his face as the result of a fall.
