Ear after cancer treatment. Damaged ear of a 94- year-old male patient following surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from the top of his ear. Basal cell carcinoma is also known as a rodent ulcer, and is the most common form of skin cancer among fair-skinned people, mostly affecting the elderly. It usually appears on the face and is thought to be caused by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. It slowly destroys the surrounding tissues, but seldom spreads further. Treatments include surgery, cryosurgery and radiotherapy.
