Cancer treatment. Tongue of a 71 year old woman after an operation to remove a tumour from her tongue. Tongue cancer is the most dangerous of the mouth cancers, as it grows fast and readily spreads to other tissues. It can be caused by smoking or chewing tobacco. It is usually painless until it is at an advanced stage, making the prognosis poor. Surgical removal at an early stage can still be effective, though.
