Skin cancer scar. Image 3 of 3. Scar on the head of an 84-year-old man four weeks after the surgical removal of a basal cell carcinoma (BCC). This skin cancer is the most common form of skin cancer among fair-skinned people, mostly affecting the elderly. It usually appears on the face and is thought to be caused by the ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. Although it slowly destroys surrounding tissues, it rarely spreads to other parts of the body. Treatments include surgery, cryosurgery and radiotherapy. For a sequence showing the skin with the growth and after its removal, see M131/589-591.
