Cancer of the colon, gross specimen. Malignant tumour in the last part of the colon causing obstruction of the intestinal tract. Several cancerous polyps, abnormal growths of tissue projecting from a mucous membrane, can also be seen. The ones seen here are red upon a stalk and are hence known as pedunculated. Certain dietary habits, such as a diet high in fat, are implicated in the development of colon cancer. The cancer usually causes no symptoms for years, but will eventually involve cramps, anaemia and abnormal bowel movements.
