Standing waves in a cup of coffee. A standing wave, also known as a stationary wave, is a wave that remains in a constant position. If the medium (here the coffee) is not moving with respect to the wave, then the standing wave is a result of interference between two waves travelling in opposite directions, in this case circular waves reflecting from the edges of the cup and the centre of the cup.
