A sample of a composite material being loaded into a test cell at the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS), Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois. Neutrons are produced by bombarding a uranium target with a beam of protons from the 500 MeV (Mega electron Volt) accelerator. The neutrons are then directed into test areas that may probe into the internal structure of a variety of biological and materials science specimens. The research at Argonne is currently specialising in investigating the internal stresses found in composite materials for the defence and aerospace industries.
