Lung cancer. Artwork showing cancer (pink, bottom right) growing amongst the alveoli (pink spheres) in a lung. Lung cancer is a common type of cancer, and is almost exclusively caused by tobacco smoking. The alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs through which the exchange of gases with the blood takes place. They are linked by a branched network of tiny airways called bronchioles. Lung cancer causes chest pain, wheezing and even the coughing up of blood. The cancer may spread to other parts of the body. If it is discovered early, before it has spread, removal of part or all of the affected lung, and subsequent cancer therapy, may provide a cure.
