A mercury drop has been placed over the coil of a speaker and then fed with a stable sine wave. Constructive and destructive interference interactions force the sample to form geometric shapes. From different modulations, distinct patterns related to the harmonic ratios between frequency, the material volume and its density emerge. Left: a 2:1 resonant phase; right: no sound.
