Duodenal cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a lymphoma of the duodenum (part of the small intestine). It is a malignant (cancerous) tumour known as a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The cause of a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is not fully understood, but may be connected with immune system suppression or viral infections. Symptoms include painless swelling and skin ulceration. If the lymphoma or the entire duodenum (duodenectomy) can be removed early in the lymphomas development, the condition may be cured. In most cases surgical removal along with radiotherapy and possibly a bone marrow transplant can prolong life. Magnification unknown.
