Oesophagus cancer. Light micrograph of a section through cancer of the oesophagus. The cancer or carcinoma is a malignant tumour (neoplasm) that primarily occurs at the lower end of the oesophagus (gullet) near the stomach. It affects more men than women, and is more common in black people than white people. Its development is not fully understood, but smoking and excessive alcohol consumption may be involved. As it develops it may block the oesophagus, causing pain when swallowing food & drink. Early detection and removal of the oesophagus (oesophagectomy) can prolong life, and may occasionally cure the patient. Magnification unknown.
